I'm a pharmacist. I read fine print for a living — drug labels, insurance formularies, prior authorization denials. So when I tell you travel insurance is one of the few travel products actually worth reading the fine print on, believe me.
Here's the honest version: travel insurance is boring until the day it isn't. A sprained ankle in Cancun, a missed connection that strands you overnight in London, a hospital visit in Accra — any one of those can turn a $1,500 vacation into a $15,000 problem. This page is my no-fluff guide to what to buy, what to skip, and what I actually recommend.
I'm a SafetyWing ambassador. If you buy through my links below, I earn a 10% commission at no extra cost to you. I recommend them because the product is genuinely good for travelers — not the other way around. Read the policy wording yourself before you buy; this page is a guide, not the contract.
Do you actually need travel insurance?
Honest answer: it depends on the trip.
Probably fine without it: a domestic US weekend trip when you already have solid health insurance. Your health plan covers you at home; the financial risk is low.
Get it: any international trip (Ghana, the Caribbean, Europe, cruises), any trip with non-refundable bookings over a couple thousand dollars, adventure activities, or travel with kids or older parents. Your US health insurance mostly stops at the border — and a medical evacuation flight alone can cost $50,000+.
What I recommend: SafetyWing Nomad Insurance
SafetyWing built their insurance for people who actually travel — not as an afterthought upsell at checkout. Two things sold me: you can buy it while you're already abroad (most insurers won't touch you once you've left home), and the pricing is straightforward monthly billing instead of a confusing per-trip quote maze.
They offer two plans. Here's the real difference:
What it is: travel medical insurance for unexpected illness and injury abroad, plus travel benefits. This is the one most vacationers need.
Covers: emergency medical treatment and hospitalization (up to $250,000), emergency medical evacuation, travel delays, trip interruption, and lost checked luggage. Optional add-ons for adventure sports, electronics theft, and US coverage.
Best for: vacations and trips from 5 days up to a year. If you're doing the Ghana trip, the Caribbean all-inclusive, or the cruise on my deals page — this is your plan.
Get Essential — Check Live Price →What it is: comprehensive global health insurance for long-term travelers, expats, and digital nomads. Think of it as a health plan that travels with you.
Adds on top of Essential: routine and preventive care, mental health support, maternity care, cancer treatment, trip cancellation, stolen belongings coverage — up to $1,500,000 in medical coverage with a $0 deductible, and full coverage in your home country.
Best for: remote workers, sabbaticals, one-way tickets, and anyone spending months (not weeks) abroad.
Get Complete — Check Live Price →What's NOT covered (read this part)
I'd rather you hear it from me than discover it at a claim:
• Pre-existing conditions aren't covered on either plan. This is standard across travel insurance — if you have a condition that needs managing abroad, talk to your regular insurer first.
• Routine checkups aren't covered on Essential — it's for the unexpected, not the annual physical.
• US coverage on Essential is an add-on, not included by default. Complete includes fuller home-country coverage.
• Prices vary by age — the figures above are for ages 18–39. Always confirm your exact price on SafetyWing's site before buying.
My recommendation
Booking a 1–4 week international trip? Get Essential. It's the cheapest real protection for the exact trips on this site — Ghana, the Caribbean, cruises. Takes five minutes.
Traveling for months, working remotely abroad, or one-way ticket? Get Complete. The routine care and mental health coverage alone justify it once you're living out of a suitcase.
Domestic US weekend getaway? Save your money — your regular health insurance has you covered.

Quick Answers
Insurance is the only travel product I recommend hoping you never use. For international trips, Essential costs less than a nice dinner and covers the disasters that actually ruin vacations. Buy it, forget about it, enjoy the trip. That's the whole strategy.
