Ghana Visa Guide — Know Before You Go

Visa requirements vary by passport. As your pharmacist-curator, I always say: sort your visa the same day you book your flight. Don't leave it to the last minute.

🇺🇸 USA Visa Required
$100 single-entry · $200 multi-entry. Apply at Ghana Embassy DC or via VFS Global online. Processing: 5–10 business days. Apply at least 3 weeks before travel.
🇨🇦 Canada Visa Required
Apply at Ghana High Commission Ottawa. Processing: 7–10 business days. Online application available. $80–$120 CAD.
🇬🇧 UK Visa Required
£80–£130 at Ghana High Commission London or online. Processing: 5–7 business days. Dual nationals check your Ghanaian status.
🌍 ECOWAS Visa Free
Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and all ECOWAS citizens enter Ghana visa-free for up to 90 days with valid ECOWAS passport.
🇯🇲 Caribbean Check Required
Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados — most Caribbean nations require a visa. Check ghanaembassy.org for your specific country's requirements.

Pharmacist's Ghana Health Guide

This is where my RPh credential actually matters. Ghana is safe — but tropical travel requires clinical preparation. These are the same recommendations I give my patients before every international trip.

💉
Yellow Fever Vaccine — Required
Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure. Bring your yellow card (International Certificate of Vaccination). No exceptions at the airport.
🦟
Malaria Prophylaxis — Non-Negotiable
Ghana is a malaria-endemic country. See your doctor or travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure. Options: Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine. Start before you arrive and finish after you return.
💧
Water Safety
Drink bottled or purified water only — including for brushing teeth outside major hotels. Pack oral rehydration salts (ORS) — available at any pharmacy or on Amazon. Dehydration hits fast in Ghana's heat.
🌡️
Heat & Sun Precautions
Ghana's equatorial heat is intense. SPF 50+ sunscreen, light breathable clothing, and consistent hydration are essential. Seniors and those on diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or beta blockers need extra water intake.
🏥
Travel Insurance — Get It
Medical evacuation from Ghana costs $15,000–$40,000 without coverage. Get travel insurance with at least $100K medical evacuation coverage. Allianz and World Nomads cover Ghana well. Buy before departure.
💊
Pack 2x Your Medications
Bring double your normal medication supply. Keep all meds in carry-on with original labels. Bring a printed medication list with generic drug names — US brand names are not always recognized in Ghanaian pharmacies.

The Beyond the Return Movement — Ghana Wants You Home

Since the landmark Year of Return 2019 — which brought 1.13 million visitors and generated $3.3 billion — Ghana's government has been running a decade-long program called "Beyond the Return." The message is clear: the door that was closed 400 years ago is now open. The diaspora — African Americans, Caribbean, British Africans — is being actively invited to visit, invest, and return. This is a once-in-a-generation cultural moment, and your pharmacist-curator is here to help you take advantage of it.

Common Questions

Ghana Travel FAQ

The questions my patients and readers ask most before their Ghana trip — answered with clinical honesty.

Is Ghana safe for diaspora travelers from the US?
Yes — Ghana consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in West Africa and ranks 61st on the Global Peace Index. It has a stable democracy, friendly locals, and is widely considered the most welcoming African country for the diaspora. Standard precautions apply: don't flash expensive jewelry, use reputable taxis or Bolt/Uber in Accra, and avoid poorly lit areas at night. The US Embassy in Accra is active and responsive.
Do I need malaria medication to visit Ghana?
As a pharmacist, my clinical answer is: yes, absolutely. Ghana is a malaria-endemic country with year-round transmission risk. The standard options are Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil — most popular, fewest side effects), Doxycycline (cheap but causes sun sensitivity — important in Ghana's climate), or Mefloquine (weekly dosing, not recommended for those with anxiety or mood disorders). See your travel clinic or doctor at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Also use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin and sleep under a mosquito net in non-air-conditioned accommodation.
What is the currency in Ghana and how should I handle money?
Ghana's currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). As of 2026, approximately 12–14 GHS = 1 USD. The best approach: bring USD cash and exchange at forex bureaux in Accra (better rates than airport). Alternatively, use a Wise card or Charles Schwab debit card (no foreign transaction fees). Most major hotels and restaurants in Accra accept Visa/Mastercard. Mobile money (MTN MoMo) is widely used — ask your hotel to help you set it up on a local SIM.
What is "Detty December" and when should I book?
Detty December (also "December in GH" or "DiGH") is the unofficial name for Ghana's massive December festival season — when the diaspora returns home en masse for Christmas and New Year. Major Afrobeats concerts, beach parties, food festivals, and cultural events run from approximately December 20–January 2. It's the most electric period in Accra's annual calendar. Average diaspora visitor spend during Detty December is $3,742 per trip. Hotels and popular events book out 3–4 months in advance. For December 2026, start booking by August 2026 at the latest.
How do I get from Accra to Cape Coast Castle?
Cape Coast is approximately 165km (3 hours) from Accra by road. Options: book a guided day tour through Viator (recommended — guide adds immense historical context), hire a private driver through your hotel ($80–$120 round trip), or take a shared tro-tro (mini-bus) from Kaneshie station in Accra (cheapest but longest). The guided Viator tour is worth the premium — having a knowledgeable guide at the castle transforms the experience. This is not a trip to rush through with Google Maps.
Can African Americans claim Ghanaian citizenship?
Ghana's "Right of Abode" program allows people of African descent — including African Americans — to apply to live and work in Ghana indefinitely, without citizenship. Full citizenship requires renouncing your original citizenship in most cases, which Ghana does not require for Right of Abode. Several hundred African Americans have permanently relocated to Ghana since the Year of Return. For full details, contact the Ghana Embassy and the Ghana Diaspora Affairs Bureau.
